/ RETROSPECTIVE FEATURING CA. 70 OF GEORG BASELITZ’S ANIMAL MOTIFS, MANY OF WHICH HAVE RARELY OR NEVER BEFORE BEEN EXHIBITED

A side of a great contemporary artist not usually seen: Georg Baselitz’s intense preoccupation with animal motifs is a dimension of his oeuvre that until now has received little attention. Baselitz’s interest in animal subjects is closely linked to his geographical location and biography. Seen all too often only as the artist who paints “upside-down” subjects, Baselitz breaks open the usual clichés associated with “animal” and “nature” in these highly expressive, dissonant works. Stereotypes such as “lapdog,” “hunting dog,” “watchdog,” and “heraldic eagle” are freed from the burden of content and their familiar connotations are questioned. The publication offers a retrospective of Baselitz’s animal pictures and includes a variety of texts that explore the artist’s attempt to come to terms with his own history and the places he has lived.

“As an artist, you can’t take a programmatic approach to being international. I wouldn’t even know where to start.” Georg Baselitz
